Turning Points Turning Points is a character education program developed and sponsored by The Learning Partnership. In Newfoundland and Labrador, our grade seven students participate in this program. We provide a wide variety of activities designed to help students explore their personal experiences. Their final project is a personal narrative essay in which they explore a turning point in their lives.
Narrative Unit Students will explore short stories through several reading and writing activities that are designed to support their genre learning. We will engage in key literary concepts including character, conflict, setting, plot, and theme, among others.
Students will engage in reading and writing activities to enhance their genre learning. We will engage in key poetic concepts including figurative language and poetic devices such as alliteration, hyperbole, metaphor, onomatopoeia, rhyme, rhythm, simile, etc.
Throughout this unit. students will participate in oral production, representing, viewing, and writing activities, as well as vocabulary building activities.
Non-Fiction Unit Students will engage in reading and writing activities to enhance their genre learning. We will engage in key non-fiction concepts including informational text and essays in addition to text features and text structures.

Public Speaking Unit Students engage in the writing process as they construct their written speech. The required components of this process include thought web, outline, rough draft, editing and revising checklist, and a final draft. This speech is then presented orally to peers and teachers.
Read Aloud We select a novel that the teacher reads aloud to students. There is a variety of activities planned for this unit, including a research project (first term).

Class Novel Study Students will read independently at home and at school a novel that will be studied in depth in class. Activities include a project.
Students select a novel to read independently at home and at school. They prepare and present a book talk so that they can encourage their peers to read their chosen book. Students are strongly encouraged to read widely and diversely throughout the year.
